What is a flight reservation for a visa?

A flight reservation for a visa is a proposed itinerary that may accompany an application. It normally lists the passenger, route, dates, airline and flight numbers. When available, a booking reference or PNR can identify the reservation in the applicable system.

The document helps an authority understand the planned journey without necessarily requiring the applicant to purchase a non-refundable ticket before a decision. It remains different from a paid e-ticket and cannot be used for boarding.

Why do some applicants use a reservation?

Document checklists from some embassies, consulates and visa centres mention a flight itinerary or reservation. The purpose may be to present dates that are consistent with the application form, accommodation, insurance and intended length of stay. A reservation can document those plans before the visa outcome is known.

Itinerary, PNR and issued ticket

The itinerary describes the proposed segments: airports, dates, times, airline and flights. A PNR is a booking reference that may identify a reservation in the relevant system. Not every airline makes every reservation publicly available through its website.

An issued ticket normally has an e-ticket number and represents paid transportation. A flight reservation is not that ticket. It should not be represented as proof of payment or a right to board.

Schengen visa application context

A Schengen visa application may require a travel itinerary, but the exact wording depends on the consulate, embassy or visa centre processing the file. Use the official checklist for your application location and visa category.

Check that passenger names match the passport and that the dates are consistent with the rest of the application. A reservation does not replace insurance, accommodation, financial evidence or other required documents. It does not guarantee visa approval.

Keep the application file consistent
